My customary three day summer visit to Gybon was a
delight. I was warmly welcomed by the new Head Pavel
Lehar, by members of the English department and by
nine responsive and attentive classes.
I am always impressed by the ability of Gybon students of
all ages to understand, speak and write English and this is
a reflection of the excellent teaching they enjoy.
for European countries.
My own lesson with each class focussed on speaking English
rather than grammar, but it is pleasing to hear from the
students that they realise the importance of understanding
grammar as the foundation stone of learning English.
I was pleased to hear about the very successful school trips to
England and Wales and to Scotland which students enjoyed
earlier this year. International understanding and
cooperation is even more vital than ever at this troubled time
It is 31 years now since Vladislav Kral, a Headmaster with an
international outlook, first invited me to Gybon in 1994 and I
hope that the School will continue to follow his inspired vision in
the future.
Thanks to everyone for making me so welcome – I was delighted
to mark my visit to Gybon and my 80th birthday on May 31st by
my third ascent of Sněžka.
